Hunter Valley is the center of the country, New South Wales wine. At the heart of the Hunter, the town of Pokolbin is the epicenter of activity in the Hunter. Pokolbin When you visit today, you could be forgiven for believing that the wine has always been the lifeblood of the region, but that's not the case.
Different sources give two different families of credit for establishing the first vineyard in the valley. Many say the Drayton family planted the first vines in country in 1830. Others credit the Wilkinson family two years earlier, in 1828. If it was Drayton or Wilkinson, one thing is certain: the vines have been growing in the region of over a century and a half.
Along with the big wineries like Tyrrell and Lindeman, many boutique wineries are thriving in and around Pokolbin. One of the real pleasures of visiting the region is the discovery of a lesser known winery and sample selections.
The Hunter Valley is best known for its traditional Semillon and Shiraz wines, but nowadays many other varieties can be found as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, including some. Mountain ranges on three sides of the Hunter Valley help protect against the harshest weather conditions, while the Tasman Sea breezes help keep the summer heat down. However, extreme summer heat and winter frost offer challenges to growers.
This is a surprise to many newcomers when they learn that the Pokolbin region has not always been known for its wines. For over a century, mining was the first sector in the area. After many of the mines were closed in the sixties, winemaking was done by local primary industry. By then, the vines have matured and growers were ready to start making his mark in the world.
In the sixties, too, was when the Australians began to appreciate the quality of their wines home. The Hunter Valley, Sydney being so close, it became a magnet for wine lovers in Sydney and the tourism industry in and around Pokolbin began to grow. Over the years, amenities and visitor attractions have been developed, including golf clubs, resorts, art galleries, restaurants and other attractions. The wine is still what attracts most visitors, but the hunter is becoming increasingly popular for other reasons too.
Located opposite the Brokenback ranges not far from Pokolbin Hunter Valley Garden is a popular destination for families. This large and beautiful landscape "garden" of more than 25 hectares, is divided into twelve separate feature gardens. Designed to be a family attraction, the Hunter Valley Gardens regularly organizes events such as hunting party's annual Easter egg. The third Sunday of each month, receive a local market that attracts artists and artisans throughout the region.
Finding accommodation Pokolbin not be difficult as there are dozens to choose from. Their biggest challenge is deciding where you want to be. There is something for every budget and lifestyle. Although it is close enough to Sydney to make only one trip a day to lose much if they fail at least one night there, so be sure to give yourself at least two days and one night. You'll be glad you did.
